Need a way to support every student writer without cloning yourself? Instructron’s Writing Activities let you assign a prompt and have Tronnie, your built-in AI coach, offer personalized, skill-specific feedback students actually understand.
Here’s how to do it from both the teacher and student sides:
👨🏫 Teacher Side: Creating a Writing Assignment
1. Sign In and Head to Writing Activities
From your teacher dashboard, scroll down and click “Writing Activities.” Then hit “Create Activity.”
2. Fill Out the Assignment Details
You’ll be prompted to enter:
- A title
- The genre (choose from Narrative, Opinion/Argumentative, Informative/Explanatory, Creative Writing, or Research)
- The writing prompt (be explicit with instructions!)
- An optional grade level
- A brief description (optional, for added context)
3. Select Skill Focus Areas (Optional but Powerful)
You can choose which areas Tronnie should focus on:
- Organization
- Elaboration
- Conventions
- Evidence
- and more
⚠️ Heads up: Selecting too many focus areas can overwhelm students. If you skip this step, Tronnie will automatically detect the most important feedback areas based on each student’s writing.
4. Assign to Students
Once you click save, your students will see the activity on their dashboard when they log in.
👩🎓 Student Side: Writing with AI Coaching
When students log in:
1. Open the Assignment
They click the writing activity. The prompt appears on the left and a text box on the right where they can type or paste in their writing.
2. Get AI Feedback
Once they’re ready, they click “Get AI Feedback.” Tronnie jumps in with skill-focused suggestions based on what you (or he) prioritized.
3. Use the Feedback Tools
- Feedback items appear in yellow under the “To Do” list.
- Once a suggestion is addressed, it turns green and moves to “Completed.”
- Students can click “Ask Coach Tronnie” for clarification or extra help—Tronnie walks them through fixes in student-friendly language.
- Students can revise and click “Get AI Feedback” again to check for improvements.
If Tronnie sees improvement, he congratulates them!
4. Finish and Submit
Once everything is complete, students can:
- Click “Send to Teacher” to finalize
- Or click for Additional Suggestions
- If they started writing elsewhere, they can also copy/paste their final draft back into a Word doc or Google Doc.
🧑🏫 Back on the Teacher Dashboard
Click on any student to:
- View their full writing history, including Tronnie’s suggestions
- See whether or not they made revisions
- Access all versions of the student’s writing to track progress
- Leave Teacher Notes, which appear directly below the writing prompt on the student’s screen
